Assessing the Impact of Autism Spectrum Disorders on Employability: A
Methodology for the Vocational Expert
-
1.5 CEUs
Patty
Thomas, M.Ed, NCSP, LPE
Ms. Thomas will be gracing us with the exciting presentation enjoyed
by attendees of the 2009’s Forensic Conference in Memphis, TN.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been prevalent in the context of
the educational system for many years. The number of individuals
identified with an ASD has risen sharply over the last decade. Now
the students that flooded the schools and changed the educational
system are adults moving into the workforce. Many individuals on the
autism spectrum are bright, well-informed and are excellent
advocates for their rights. The vocational expert can expect to see
more and more cases of misplaced workers and situations of
discrimination related to this disability. This presentation will
present basic concepts that will help the vocational expert
understand autism spectrum, determine the functional limitations of
the individual, address appropriate occupational placement, and
offer an opinion as to whether or not the individual has been
discriminated against in the context of the A.D.A.
